Pediatric anesthesiologists dedicated to the care of children are already engaged in using many integrative modalities to improve patients and family’s experiences, but the armamentarium of integrative techniques is broad, and the pursuit of knowledge and experiences in this field can be overwhelming. The SPA-SPPM IM SIG creates a formal centralized community of interested members, many of whom already have expertise in various modalities, and all of whom wish to learn more. This group provides a structured way for members to learn more about various integrative systems and techniques that can be used in the perioperative arena, teach one another about using different integrative modalities in practice, and ultimately add another dimension to the way we care for our patients and their families. We also engage non-anethesiologist experts and leaders in the field and leverage this community to educate the SPA membership as a whole.
Our Activities:
- Convene quarterly meetings where members come together to learn, teach one another, share experiences and grow
- Invite experts in Pediatric Integrative Medicine to present on their work to the group, with an emphasis on possible use of various techniques by pediatric anesthesiologists to present and discuss integrative modalities that they are using the perioperative arena
- Create a forum where members can collaborate on research projects and potentially enlarge the scope of investigation by including multiple institutions and patient populations
- Expand the community of pediatric anesthesiologists who are comfortable with IM techniques, improving perioperative care for children and adolescents
