The Biomedical Informatics Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia is a community of leaders in clinical informatics, data science, and anesthesia information management systems with a focus on advancing pediatric perioperative medicine. We work to develop standards, optimize the functionality of electronic health records, and support safe, effective pediatric perioperative care worldwide.

The SIG has led several impactful initiatives, including the standardization of the pediatric pre-anesthesia evaluation note, now integrated into Epic’s foundation system and available to institutions globally. We continue to collaborate with pediatric anesthesia and informatics leaders to promote best practices in education, research, and clinical care.

Our mission is to:

  • Improve education and training of pediatric anesthesiologists in clinical informatics, clinical decision support, and data science.
  • Develop standards for pediatric perioperative care in partnership with electronic health record developers worldwide.
  • Establish frameworks for multi-center research collaboration leveraging EHR and registry data.
  • Innovate in clinical informatics and medical device development, with special attention to artificial intelligence and machine learning applications.
  • Advance patient safety by integrating clinical decision support tools directly into perioperative workflows.

Current Projects:

  • Pediatric Pre-Anesthesia Evaluation Note standardization (Epic integration completed in 2024).
  • Critical Events Checklist integration into electronic health record systems.
  • Collaboration with the ASA Committee on Informatics and Information Technologies on national policy (21st Century Cures Act statement).
  • Partnership with Epic developers on a Community Registry Tool to streamline national registry data capture and governance.
  • Exploration of the Epic Cosmos platform, a collaborative dataset for population-level research and point-of-care clinical insights.
  • Ongoing terminology and standards development, including work on difficult airway syndrome.
