Support for those affected by LA Fires

Dear SPA Members,

Our hearts are with all those affected by the devastating fires in Los Angeles and the surrounding areas. The loss of homes, displacement of families, and challenges faced by emergency responders and communities during this time are heartbreaking.

To those in our membership directly impacted, please know that we stand with you. We are here to support you in any way we can. Whether it’s resources, connections, or just someone to talk to, we want to be a source of strength in this challenging time.

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to the firefighters, first responders, and volunteers who are working tirelessly to protect lives and property. Their bravery and selflessness are a source of hope for all of us.

Together, as a society, we can help uplift those in need and show the power of compassion and community in the face of adversity.

There are likely a significant number of SPA members affected, more than we can decipher at this time. The SPA will donate $5,000 to the Red Cross to support those who have suffered significant losses due to the fires.

If you would like to donate to organizations supporting those affected by the fires, please consider donating to local Los Angeles organizations, the Red Cross, Save the Children, or an organization of your choosing.

With empathy and solidarity,

SPA Leadership

In Memoriam: Desmond B. Henry MD

With great sadness, we inform you of the passing on Aug. 29 of Desmond Henry, M.D., retired Children’s Health Anesthesiologist-in-Chief and Professor of Pediatrics and Anesthesiology and Pain Management, UT Southwestern.

Dr. Henry joined Children’s Health and UT Southwestern in September 2007. He served as our Anesthesiologist-in-Chief for 10 years, retiring Dec. 31, 2017.

During his tenure with Children’s Health, Dr. Henry helped grow the Anesthesiology program, adding providers of not only the crucial medication for surgical procedures but also sedation in other areas including Radiology, Hematology-Oncology and Pain Management. Among his many contributions, he served as Medical/Dental Staff President in 2015.

Dr. Henry, who was fluent in Spanish, received his medical degree from the Autonomous University of Guadalajara School of Medicine, then completed pediatric and anesthesiology residencies at the University of California Irvine Medical Center and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesia and pediatric critical care medicine at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

Before coming to Children’s Health, Dr. Henry was chief of Anesthesiology at Children’s Hospital Colorado in Denver for 10 years.

Dr. Henry’s family expressed gratitude to Children’s Health for supporting him throughout his illness. They also shared that his time at Children’s Health and UT Southwestern was “the fondest of his professional career” because of relationships that transcended friendship and became akin to family.
