The Critical Care Medicine and Pediatric Anesthesia special interest group within the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia was created by pediatric anesthesiologists and intensivists to represent and support physicians who practice in both the operating room and the ICU, as well as trainees pursuing or considering training in multiple pediatric disciplines. The special interest group focuses on strengthening the practice of combined physicians, advocating for training future dual-trained physicians, and promoting educational and research opportunities for combined physicians.

Our mission is to:

  • Create a network of pediatric anesthesiology and critical care physicians that works to improve the recruitment, retention and professional development of physicians who practice in both the critical care and perioperative environments.
  • Foster mentorship for medical students, residents and fellows who are interested in various forms of combined training to facilitate mentorship and career development.
  • Promote integrated research and education at the intersection of pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric critical care medicine.
  • Establish standards and practice patterns for combined faculty positions.
  • Advocate for an optimized and enhanced training experience for residents and fellows who wish to pursue dual training / combined careers.

Current projects:

  • Generate and maintain a database of combined pediatric anesthesiology and pediatric critical care medicine physicians and collect a record of their practice patterns.
  • Develop a survey mechanism to better understanding pediatrics and anesthesia trainee motivations for career selection.
  • Implement an educational program at the annual Society for Pediatric Anesthesia / AAP conference to promote improved clinical knowledge of topics at the intersection of Pediatric Critical Care and Pediatric Anesthesiology.
